play Sound Alikes

Sometimes a client will ask us to compose music that "sounds like" a particular style or song.  I love these assignments.

In my alter-ego as the "Song Analyst" on Art of the Song - Creativity Radio (www.artofthesong.org) I talk about specific tools songwriters use to create powerful songs.  To create a sound alike, I get to take the next step: create new music based on the  specific tools and "stylistic imperatives" of the original work.

There's nothing like studying and imitating the masters as a way to hone your own skills - and to find places from which to explore new territory.  The debt to our progenitors is always there, even if it's not so obvious as with sound alikes.  Isaac Newton made this point when he said "If I have seen farther it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."  I'm doing my best to climb up onto those shoulders and then create something new.  - Michael
